Partial Hospitalization PHP in Massachusetts
PHP includes treatment options for people with substance abuse issues or dual diagnosis. It may be appropriate for patients, ages 18 and over, who require a short-term intensive outpatient program for stabilization. The aim of the program is to prevent full hospitalization or to facilitate the transition from the hospital back to the community.
Program Details
Participation in this program may consist of:
- Daily group therapy provided by qualified counseling professionals
- Medication assessment and management provided by a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner
- Individualized treatment and safety planning
- Individual therapeutic check in sessions
- Care coordination with outpatient providers and family as needed
- Aftercare planning and referrals
- Optional lunch provided

Therapeutic techniques
Therapeutic techniques used at Fuller outpatient facilities may include:
- Acceptance and commitment therapy
- Cognitive behavior therapy
- Dialectical behavior therapy
- Psychoeducation
- Open processing therapy
Schedule and Length of Treatment
PHP runs from 9 am – 2 pm, Monday through Friday, at the Fuller cottages on the hospital campus, slightly separate from the main building. Participants engage in four daily groups, each 45 to 60 minutes, in a comfortable, homey atmosphere.
The typical group size ranges from ten to twelve members. Our skilled treatment team strives to tailor the daily group topics to meet the specific and evolving needs of program participants.
Typically, the PHP program is two weeks or more, influenced by clinical presentation and requirements. Virtual programming via telehealth is available for patients who qualify, providing the same evidence-based programming and resources as the in-person PHP.
